If the pandemic changed your desire as quickly as your social life, you’re not alone. Between close quarters and less outside stimulation, it can be harder to get in the mood. But fear not, there is a way to get it back and we are here to help.

“Not being interested in sex during a global pandemic is completely normal”, says psychologist Dr. Rachel Goldman, PhD. “The main culprit is stress and anxiety, which has increased substantially in the last two years. And this stress isn’t just normal day to day pressure, it is driven by multiple factors that may include added financial or overall health stress. When we perceive an event as stressful, it triggers the fight or flight response in our body, which is an automatic physiological reaction.”

If you have a partner, you may be with them 24/7, which can eliminate the end of day excitement to reconnect. On the flip side, if you are single, new interactions with potential partners may create anxiety. And, thanks to our hormones, the more you have sex, the more you want it…so if your libido is lacking, we have a few tips below

1. Decide how you feel about it.

If you’re okay with your libido being on the lower side, keep doing what you need to do to get through these unprecedented times. But if you want to have more desire, read on.

2. Increase intimacy.

Sex is one kind of intimacy, but there are so many options.  If you have a partner, make a point to reconnect at the beginning or end of the day. Non-sexual touching can help you feel calmer and more safe.  If you don’t have a partner, do this with yourself. Increase your self-awareness.

3. Begin somewhere.

Whether it’s masturbation or you turn off Netflix to spoon and touch, intimacy has to start somewhere. It may not be perfect, and you may need to communicate more or re-learn some things but committing to a small habit may make you think about it more, and ultimately can lead to having more sex. Desire isn’t always spontaneous, it can be created through outside stimulus.

4. Do more of what works for you.

If Sex/Life turns you on, watch it again.  If taking a bath and shaving your legs is more your style, take an extra 5 minutes for that. Think about what made you feel desire prior to the pandemic – and decide if those are safe activities for you today.
