At Rae, we’re resolving to take small steps to support our overall well-being in 2023 – taking the stairs, drinking an extra glass of water and taking our supplements (especially our Multivitamin!). While every year people around the world make New Year’s resolutions to improve their health and better their lives, unfortunately, research shows that 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by the beginning of February, which is why we asked our partner Dr. Rachel Goldman, Ph.D, FTOS for her advice on setting goals to support your wellness in the year ahead. Dr. Rachel is a licensed psychologist and a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the NYU School of Medicine who offers therapy services including health behavior change.
Dr. Rachel’s tips include:
- Think about what you really want and then break it down into small, actionable steps. Consider writing down your goal to help you create a plan and give you a visual to review later to stay on target.
- Set short term SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, timely) behavioral goals and focus on the things that are in your control.
- Don’t be hard on yourself if you don’t succeed at first – it may simply mean that the goal was too challenging for that particular week.
- If you need to, consider tweaking the goals to make them more achievable and try again.
